Suicide Bombings Kill 23 in Nigeria

Mar 18, 2026

A wave of suspected suicide bombings has struck Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno state, leaving at least 23 people dead and more than 100 injured. The coordinated attacks targeted several crowded locations—including a post office, a popular weekly market, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital—within minutes of one another. The explosions occurred shortly after residents had gathered to break their Ramadan fast, ensuring that the areas were packed with civilians at the time of the attacks.

Nigerian authorities have attributed the violence to Boko Haram militants, a terrorist organization that has plagued the region for years with brutal insurgency tactics. Maiduguri has long been a focal point in the struggle against extremist groups operating across northeastern Nigeria and parts of the Lake Chad region. Despite ongoing military operations aimed at dismantling the group, attacks like this one demonstrate that the threat of terrorism and instability remains deeply entrenched.
