Supervolcano: Countdown to Global Famine

Jun 2, 2025

We may be just one supervolcano eruption away from a global catastrophe. While most volcanic eruptions don't carry the potential to alter the course of human history, supervolcanoes are an entirely different story. One such volcano—Campi Flegrei in Italy—has shown signs of reawakening. Scientists have recorded over 6,000 earthquakes in the area within the past six months, along with alarming emissions of gas from the Solfatara crater. These tremors weaken the crust, allowing magma to rise more easily, and new reports indicate that magma is now only a few miles from the surface. Pressure is mounting, and if released suddenly, the resulting eruption could be devastating, not only for Italy but for the entire planet.

A full-scale eruption at Campi Flegrei could trigger what experts call a "volcanic winter"—a dramatic global cooling event caused by ash and sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere, which would block sunlight and disrupt weather patterns. Historical precedent shows the deadly consequences of such events. The volcanic winter of 536 AD led to widespread famine, disease, and the deaths of millions. A repeat or worse scenario today could cause a catastrophic collapse of global food supplies, leading to famine on an unimaginable scale. While an eruption is not guaranteed, the increasing seismic activity, rising magma, and weakening crust indicate that the possibility is very real—and the consequences would be far-reaching and severe.
