We may be just one supervolcano eruption away from a global catastrophe. One such volcano—Campi Flegrei in Italy—has shown signs of reawakening. Historical precedent shows the deadly consequences of such events. The volcanic winter of 536 AD led to widespread famine, disease, and the deaths of millions. A repeat or worse scenario today could cause a catastrophic collapse of global food supplies, leading to famine on an unimaginable scale.
