Sweden is reportedly increasing preparations over fears that Russia could attempt a sudden move to seize the strategic island of Gotland. Swedish defense chief Michael Claesson warned that such an operation could happen at any time as a test of NATO resolve. Military planners are now shifting focus toward the Baltic Sea, where strategic islands have become central in war game scenarios.

Recent exercises have reportedly simulated Russian landings not only on Gotland, but also on Bornholm and the Estonian islands of Hiiumaa and Saaremaa. Swedish intelligence officials have also warned that Russia may be capable of widening its military ambitions in coming years. They further noted that any pause or end to the current war could allow Vladimir Putin to reposition forces closer to NATO territory.
