Sweden has announced plans to launch a new government electronic identity system known as Sverige-ID on December 1, 2026. The digital identification platform will allow Swedish citizens and registered residents to verify their identity online, share personal information securely, and digitally sign documents. Developed by the Swedish Police Authority in cooperation with the Agency for Digital Government, the system will serve as a state-backed alternative to BankID, the widely used digital identity service already used by millions across the country.

The new e-ID will also integrate with the European Union’s broader digital identity framework. Once implemented, users will be able to access services not only within Sweden but across other EU member states as well. To obtain the credential, individuals must apply for a national ID card or resident identification card that can be linked to the digital identity system. Officials say the goal is to create a trusted digital identity infrastructure that simplifies access to thousands of online services while aligning with EU regulations governing cross-border digital identification.
