A Muslim preacher in Melbourne, Australia, has drawn national attention after reportedly urging followers to embrace hostility toward Jews and Christians and declaring that religious devotion can include taking up arms against enemies. The preacher, known as Abu Ahmad and associated with the Al Bayyinah Islamic Centre in Springvale, made the statements during a sermon posted online by the center. According to reporting cited by The Jerusalem Post, Ahmad told listeners not to take Jews and Christians as friends and spoke of an obligation to declare “enmity,” opposition, and even armed resistance against those he characterized as enemies. The remarks have attracted additional scrutiny because Ahmad's Melbourne institution has documented connections with controversial Islamic networks in Sydney, including preacher Wissam Haddad. The rhetoric should not be treated as representative of Muslims generally, but the explicit language attributed to this particular preacher is alarming precisely because it moves beyond political criticism or theological disagreement and into language endorsing hostility and armed confrontation.
The sermon arrives against an already dangerous backdrop for Jewish communities. The J7 Large Communities' Task Force Against Antisemitism reported that more than 23,000 antisemitic incidents occurred during 2025 across Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States—countries containing more than 90% of the Jewish diaspora. Twenty people were murdered in antisemitic attacks that year, making 2025 the deadliest year for antisemitic violence in the diaspora in more than three decades. The threat has continued into 2026: authorities recently described a shooting outside an Ontario synagogue during Yom Kippur as a hate-motivated anti-Jewish offense, while British authorities disrupted what they said was a suspected terrorist plot targeting Manchester's Jewish community during the same holy day. Jewish families are increasingly confronting an unsettling reality: synagogues, schools, holiday celebrations, and other expressions of Jewish identity can require levels of security once associated with government buildings and military installations.
