Temple Mount Sovereignty Declared

Itamar Ben-Gvir declared that Israel has “restored sovereignty” on the Temple Mount during a Jerusalem Day visit to the highly contested holy site. Ahead of the annual Flag March through Jerusalem’s Old City, Ben-Gvir ascended the Temple Mount and publicly celebrated what he described as increased Israeli control over the area. In remarks posted to social media, he stated that the mount is now “in our hands” and credited stronger security measures and deterrence policies for what he called one of the quietest Ramadan periods in years.

The Temple Mount remains one of the most sensitive religious flashpoints on earth. Since Israel captured the Old City during the 1967 Six-Day War, a delicate status quo arrangement has remained in place in which Israel controls overall security while the Jordanian-backed Islamic Waqf manages the daily administration of the compound. Ben-Gvir has repeatedly challenged that arrangement and has become one of the most outspoken Israeli officials advocating for expanded Jewish presence and sovereignty at the site. His decision to raise the Israeli flag on the mount during Jerusalem Day celebrations is likely to intensify regional tensions and draw sharp reactions across the Middle East.
