Jerusalem’s Temple Mount once again became the center of international attention after Israeli police arrested 13 individuals accused of attempting to carry out a sacrificial ritual ahead of the Jewish feast of Shavuot. According to reports, the group breached security and entered the Temple Mount compound carrying loaves of bread intended for use in a ceremonial offering. Unlike previous incidents involving attempts to bring goats onto the site, no animals were reportedly involved this time. Police quickly detained the individuals before the ritual could proceed.
The arrests follow several similar incidents in recent weeks involving activists attempting to revive ancient Temple practices. Earlier this month authorities arrested individuals suspected of trying to bring sacrificial goats to the Mount, continuing a pattern of increasingly visible efforts connected to groups advocating for renewed Temple worship. Though these movements remain outside mainstream Judaism and many rabbinic authorities oppose such actions, the repeated attempts highlight a growing interest among some groups in restoring elements associated with the biblical Temple system. The Temple Mount remains Judaism’s holiest site and Islam’s third holiest site, making even minor developments there intensely sensitive.
