An Egyptian national who overstayed his U.S. visa after arriving in 2022 has been charged in a brutal attack that left eight people injured during a peaceful rally in Boulder, Colorado. Authorities say Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, set several victims on fire while shouting “Free Palestine” and other anti-Israel slogans. The victims, ranging in age from 52 to 88, were participating in a walk organized by “Run for Their Lives,” a group raising awareness for Israeli hostages still held by Hamas. Soliman was arrested at the scene and is now facing multiple felony charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and one involving the use of incendiary devices. He is being held on a $10 million bond.
The attack, which took place near the county courthouse, is being investigated as ideologically motivated violence by the FBI and other federal agencies. Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser called it a likely hate crime, noting that the victims were targeted because of their support for Israel. Soliman, who entered the U.S. on a B1/B2 visa in August 2022 and failed to leave when it expired in early 2023, had reportedly filed for asylum. The “Run for Their Lives” organization, which has hosted weekly events without incident since October 2023, condemned the violence and reiterated its commitment to advocating for the hostages' release through peaceful means.
