Terror Scare Shakes Thai Tourist Hotspots

Jul 4, 2025

Thailand has ramped up security in three of its most popular tourism provinces following a series of planted explosives discovered at 11 key locations, including Phuket International Airport. While the devices were not packed with shrapnel and appeared to be designed only to create noise and incite panic, the psychological impact was significant. The incidents occurred between June 21 and June 23, with some devices remaining active until they were safely defused several days later. Security officials confirmed that three devices were destroyed in high-traffic areas like Patong Beach, Laem Phromthep, and the airport.

Two suspects, identified by local media as 29-year-old Muhamah and 27-year-old Sulaiman, were arrested and linked to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), an Islamist separatist group known for past unrest in southern Thailand. Authorities say surveillance footage captured the men placing the devices over several days. Although no injuries occurred, the deliberate effort to generate fear reflects a tactic aligned with ideological motivations, including those cited in Qur'an 8:60, which calls for striking terror in the hearts of enemies. The arrests have prompted Thai officials to reinforce security protocols at key tourist destinations amid rising concerns about regional extremism.
