A prominent Jewish rabbi says preparations have reached the point where an altar for renewed biblical sacrifices is already built and ready to be taken to the Temple Mount. Rabbi Tovia Singer, founder of Outreach Judaism, said during a Sukkot interview that the necessary altar stones have been prepared without being cut by metal, priestly garments have been sewn, and silver trumpets have been made according to Jewish tradition. “We have an altar that’s ready to go,” Singer said, arguing that the absence of a completed Third Temple does not necessarily prevent sacrifices from beginning. The Temple Institute likewise teaches extensively about the biblical altar and has spent decades researching and preparing vessels, garments, and other elements associated with renewed Temple worship. The enormous remaining obstacles are not merely construction-related: control of the Temple Mount, questions concerning ritual purity, the precise location of the altar, rabbinic disagreements, and explosive political and religious consequences all stand between preparation and actual sacrifices.
Singer's argument rests on a fascinating biblical precedent found in Ezra 3. When the Jewish exiles returned from Babylon to a devastated Jerusalem, they did not wait for the Second Temple to be completed before restoring sacrifices. They first constructed the altar and began offering burnt offerings morning and evening despite fear of the surrounding peoples. Ezra 3:6 makes the sequence unmistakable: “From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, although the foundation of the temple of the LORD had not been laid.” Only afterward did construction of the Temple proceed. Jewish legal tradition has subsequently discussed this principle, including the position that sacrifices may be offered even without a standing Temple building. Singer believes that ancient sequence could provide the model for what happens next in Jerusalem: altar first, sacrifices next, Temple later. That means the prophetic significance of renewed sacrifice may not depend upon watching construction crews complete an enormous Temple before the sacrificial system can begin.
