The Birth Pangs Report: Jan 30-Feb 5, 2026

Feb 6, 2026

From January 30-February 5, 2026, Earth experienced a cluster of notable natural hazards, including damaging earthquakes, ongoing volcanic eruptions, and significant storm systems affecting multiple continents; the events listed below highlight major, well‑documented disasters but do not capture every single hazardous incident that occurred worldwide during this period. This report is merely to indict that the earth is indeed "groaning."

🌪️ SEVERE STORMS

Confirmed Impact Events:

  • Winter Storm Gianna (United States) — A powerful bomb cyclone / winter storm formed Jan 30 and persisted through Feb 2, bringing heavy snow (up to 12–24 inches in parts of the Carolinas), strong winds, coastal impacts, and widespread travel disruption across the Southeastern and Eastern U.S.; involved in deepening offshore low-pressure systems and near-blizzard conditions in some areas.

  • Tropical Cyclone Fytia hits Madagascar — At least 12 dead, 2 000 homes destroyed

  • Storm Leonardo (Europe / Northern Africa) — Storm Leonardo brought torrential rainfall, flooding, and strong winds to Spain, Portugal, and parts of northern Africa, causing evacuations, infrastructure damage, and multiple fatalities as flood waters rose.

  • Tropical Cyclone Penha (Philippines / Western Pacific) — A tropical storm system active in early February that struck parts of the Philippines with heavy rain, flooding, and landslides resulting in multiple fatalities and thousands displaced.

  • Localized Severe Weather / Tornado Events (USA) — Reports indicated two brief tornado touchdowns near Plum Grove, Texas, during stormy conditions in the region (general convective activity with thunderstorms)

🌍 EARTHQUAKE ACTIVITY (M5.0+)

Notable Events:

  • M5.4 — Southern East Pacific Rise

  • M5.0 — Kermadec Islands region (offshore New Zealand)

  • M5.2 — Iran, Bushehr offshore

  • M5.0 — Central East Pacific Rise

  • M6.1 — New Zealand, Kermadec Islands offshore

  • M5.8 — Indonesia, East Java offshore — 1 fatality confirmed; approximately 40 injured; structural damage reported

  • M5.0 — Philippine Sea, near Sibale Island

🌋 VOLCANIC ACTIVITY

Active / Notable Systems During Window:

  • Kīlauea (Hawaiʻi, USA) — Halemaʻumaʻu fountaining paused; inflation building beneath the summit, with the next eruptive episode projected between February 11–16 following recent activity in late January and early February; current status WATCH / ORANGE

  • Great Sitkin (Alaska, USA) — Slow lava effusion continuing within the summit crater; activity ongoing since 2021; status WATCH / ORANGE

  • Shiveluch (Kamchatka, Russia) — Elevated eruptive activity producing large ash plumes reaching 30,000 feet, with ongoing explosive behavior observed

  • Shishaldin (Alaska, USA) — Low-level unrest marked by elevated seismicity and intermittent steam emissions; status ADVISORY / YELLOW

  • Mayon (Philippines) — Continued lava effusion, pyroclastic density currents, and frequent rockfalls associated with the 2025–2026 eruptive cycle

  • Karangetang (Indonesia) — Ongoing volcanic unrest with persistent eruptive activity reported during the monitoring window

🦠 PESTILENCE & DISEASE WATCH

Confirmed Authority Reports:

  • Chikungunya — Seychelles OutbreakHealth authorities in the Republic of Seychelles have reported an ongoing chikungunya virus outbreak, with rising case numbers prompting public-health advisories on mosquito control and symptomatic care. Additionally, outbreaks in Suriname and ongoing mosquito-borne transmission are noted in travel health advisories.

  • Monkeypox — Ghana & Liberia (Clade II)Ongoing clade II monkeypox outbreaks are reported in Ghana and Liberia, where the virus is endemic and cases continue.

  • Measles — Mexico & United States ActivityA major measles outbreak in Jalisco, Mexico, has prompted health alerts and vaccination campaigns, with over 1,000 confirmed cases and expanded transmission risk ahead of major upcoming international events. Additionally, the U.S. has reported measles cases and complications (including hospitalizations with severe outcomes like encephalitis and pneumonia) linked to resurgence among unvaccinated populations.
