The Dark Deception of Modern Magick

Jun 9, 2025

The romanticized idea of magic as a force for freedom and happiness, popularized in 1960s music like The Lovin’ Spoonful’s Do You Believe in Magic?, stands in stark contrast to what the Bible reveals about its true nature. While the song suggests music is like magic that can liberate the soul, Scripture warns that real magic—more accurately spelled “magick” by occultists—is a dangerous spiritual practice that enslaves rather than frees. Biblical references to magicians, beginning in Genesis 41:8, describe individuals deeply involved in occult arts, not mere entertainers. The Hebrew word hartom, used for magicians in Egypt, is tied to ancient divination practices. Magic, unlike divination, is the willful manipulation of spiritual forces, often demonic, to produce a desired outcome. Though some today romanticize the occult as a path to enlightenment or self-empowerment, it is, in truth, a counterfeit religion that rejects God’s authority and invites spiritual bondage.

This deception continues today through a cultural resurgence of occult symbolism, music, and teachings. Influences from infamous occultist Aleister Crowley—whose teachings centered around personal will and demonic guidance—have permeated entertainment and music, from The Beatles to modern metal bands. Crowley’s philosophy of “Do what thou wilt” openly opposes the biblical call to seek God’s will (Matt. 6:10). The occult’s appeal lies in offering power, belonging, and purpose outside of God—but at the cost of eternal truth. As occultism masks itself in tolerance and enlightenment, Christians must remain discerning, rejecting syncretism and holding fast to a biblical worldview. In these last days, spiritual deception is on the rise, and only through God’s Word can we navigate the darkness disguised as light.

Stay Awake. Keep Watch.
