A massive and unusually complex weather system is taking shape over the United States as tropical moisture and multiple atmospheric features converge to threaten days of torrential rain and potentially significant flooding. Forecasters have described the developing system as a “hybrid storm,” with the remnants of Hurricane Polo interacting with a large upper-level disturbance and enormous quantities of tropical moisture surging northward. The National Weather Service has issued Moderate Risks for excessive rainfall across portions of the Southwest, central and southern High Plains, and southern Plains, warning that flash flooding could produce locally considerable impacts. Roughly 27 million people from Arizona to Illinois have been under flood alerts as the threat shifts eastward, with widespread rainfall totals of several inches and localized areas potentially receiving more than six inches. Parts of central Texas could receive considerably more before the system finally moves through.
What makes this event particularly unusual is the combination of ingredients feeding it. Tropical moisture associated with Polo is being pulled into a slow-moving weather pattern while additional moisture surges north from the Gulf, creating an enormous atmospheric pipeline across the middle of the country. Forecasters warn that rainfall rates could become intense enough to overwhelm drainage systems and rapidly flood roads, streams, and low-lying areas. In parts of Texas, forecasts call for two to five inches of widespread rain with localized totals above six inches, while portions of Southeast Texas could receive two to four inches and individual thunderstorms could produce rainfall rates approaching three to four inches per hour. The threat stretches across multiple states and several days, meaning the greatest danger may come not from one spectacular moment but from repeated rounds of heavy rain falling over increasingly saturated ground.
