What began as a debate about technology is increasingly taking on the characteristics of a spiritual movement. A growing number of technologists, futurists, and artificial intelligence advocates are openly discussing AI in terms once reserved for religion, salvation, and transcendence. From predictions of a coming "singularity" to visions of humans merging with machines, the language surrounding artificial intelligence has become deeply theological. Researchers studying the phenomenon note striking similarities between modern AI movements and traditional religious systems, complete with prophets, apocalyptic warnings, moral obligations, and promises of a transformed future.
Some of the most visible examples have moved beyond metaphor and into outright religious expression. Former Google engineer Anthony Levandowski founded the "Way of the Future," a church dedicated to the worship of a future artificial superintelligence. Although the organization briefly closed, it later reopened after renewed public interest following the rise of advanced AI systems such as ChatGPT. Other groups have emerged with similar beliefs, viewing artificial superintelligence as an entity capable of guiding humanity, delivering wisdom, or even bringing a form of heaven on earth. At the same time, influential figures in the AI community continue to speak of existential threats, technological salvation, and humanity's eventual transformation through machine intelligence.
