The war between Russia and Ukraine took a dramatic turn this week as Ukrainian forces launched what has been described as the largest drone attack ever carried out against Moscow. Nearly 200 drones reportedly targeted the Russian capital, striking critical infrastructure and igniting a massive fire at a major oil refinery operated by Gazprom on the southeastern edge of the city. The unprecedented attack injured civilians, disrupted air traffic at multiple airports, and demonstrated Ukraine’s growing ability to project force deep into Russian territory.
Moscow quickly vowed retaliation. Russian officials warned that the strike would be met with frequent and “massive group strikes” against Ukrainian targets in the days ahead. The attack comes amid an already dangerous escalation in the conflict, which has transformed from a regional war into a prolonged struggle involving advanced weapons, drone swarms, cyber operations, and increasing geopolitical tensions. As both sides continue to raise the stakes, concerns are mounting that the conflict could spill into a broader international crisis with far-reaching consequences for Europe and beyond.
