Discussion surrounding the restoration of Temple sacrifices in Jerusalem is once again drawing attention as a growing number of Jewish activists argue that sacrificial worship could resume even before the construction of a Third Temple. Rabbi Joshua Wander, an American-Israeli advocate for renewing Temple rituals, recently stated that biblical precedent allows sacrifices to be offered on the Temple Mount without a rebuilt Temple structure. Pointing to the days of Ezra following the Jewish return from exile, Wander argues that sacrifices resumed before the Temple itself was reconstructed. He maintains that political restrictions—not theological barriers—are the primary obstacle preventing such practices from beginning today.
The issue has become increasingly visible as several recent attempts to bring sacrificial offerings onto the Temple Mount have resulted in arrests by Israeli authorities. During both Passover and Shavuot this year, activists attempted to carry goats and other offerings to the mount in hopes of performing biblical rituals. While these efforts remain controversial and are rejected by much of Israel's religious establishment, support appears to be growing among certain Temple-focused movements. Attendance at educational reenactments and Temple preparation events has reportedly expanded from only a handful of participants decades ago to roughly 1,000 people today. At the same time, Jewish visitation and prayer activity on the Temple Mount continue to increase despite longstanding political sensitivities surrounding the site.
