As the conflict between Israel and Iran continues to capture global attention, some analysts argue that the struggle extends far beyond geopolitics, military strategy, or regional power. Iranian-born author and commentator Ali Siadatan recently suggested that the Islamic regime’s hostility toward Israel is deeply rooted in theology and eschatology. According to Siadatan, the modern State of Israel presents a profound challenge to the ideological foundations of the Iranian regime because Israel’s rebirth, the restoration of the Jewish people to their ancient homeland, and the reunification of Jerusalem align with biblical prophecies that many believed impossible. In his view, Israel’s very existence stands as a visible reminder that the prophetic promises of Scripture continue to unfold on the stage of history.
Siadatan argues that the Islamic Republic has increasingly embraced a vision centered on the coming of the Mahdi, an end-times figure within Islamic eschatology, while simultaneously viewing Jerusalem as a critical spiritual and ideological battleground. He contends that the conflict is ultimately a clash between competing visions of the future—one rooted in biblical prophecy and the kingdom of God, and another rooted in alternative ideological systems seeking global influence and authority. Drawing from passages in Daniel and Deuteronomy, Siadatan points to the biblical concept of spiritual forces operating behind earthly kingdoms, suggesting that the struggle involving Israel, Iran, and the broader Middle East cannot be fully understood apart from its spiritual dimension.
