The Surveillance State Goes Wearable

May 14, 2026

The Department of Homeland Security is reportedly moving forward with plans to develop AI-powered smart glasses capable of identifying individuals in real time using facial recognition and biometric databases. According to budget documents, DHS is requesting millions in funding to create wearable technology that would allow agents to instantly access biometric information while conducting field operations. The proposal comes after ICE agents were already spotted in multiple states wearing Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses during enforcement actions, raising serious concerns about surveillance and privacy.

The technology would reportedly integrate with Mobile Fortify, a biometric application already used by ICE and Customs and Border Protection. The app allows agents to photograph faces or scan fingerprints and compare them against massive government databases containing hundreds of millions of records, including visa photos, driver’s licenses, and FBI systems. Critics warn the technology is not limited to illegal immigrants and could easily scan American citizens and lawful residents as well. Some lawmakers and civil liberty advocates have described the expansion as dangerous, especially after reports surfaced of agents allegedly scanning protestors and monitoring individuals engaged in protected public activities.
