The U.S. intelligence community is developing artificial intelligence capable of determining where a photograph, audio recording, or video was captured even when the file contains no usable location metadata. The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, or IARPA, launched a program called LocUS—Location Using Sound—that aims to automatically combine visual and acoustic clues to pinpoint a recording's location within roughly 250 meters, or about 820 feet, in less than five minutes. Instead of relying on GPS coordinates, the system could examine seemingly insignificant details such as electrical outlets, architecture, vegetation, room acoustics, traffic noise, weather patterns, shadows, distant voices, and objects appearing briefly in the background. Clues that might take a human intelligence analyst hours or days to recognize and compare could eventually be processed by AI almost instantly.
The technology represents part of a much larger transformation already underway inside American intelligence and defense agencies. The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency says it is using AI to process enormous quantities of maps, satellite imagery, video, GPS information, and other geospatial data more quickly, with improved identification and automated geolocation among its stated objectives. Commercial technology is moving in the same direction: AeroVironment advertises an AI-enabled GeoPoint system capable of geolocating cellphone, surveillance-camera, and low-altitude drone imagery in roughly three to five minutes using reference data containing more than 250 million images and nine billion map nodes. The potential intelligence and national-security applications are obvious, from locating hostages and identifying battlefields to tracking adversaries and verifying footage. But the same technological trajectory raises an equally profound privacy question: if increasingly powerful AI can determine where you are simply by examining what appears and sounds in the background of something you post, removing location services may eventually provide far less anonymity than people assume.
