A dramatic shift appears to be taking place in Israel as support for rebuilding the Third Temple reaches levels not seen in modern history. According to a new survey, 55% of Jewish Israelis now support rebuilding the Beit HaMikdash (Holy Temple) on the Temple Mount, compared to just 30% in a similar poll conducted in 2013. Researchers point to the October 7, 2023 Hamas massacre as a pivotal turning point. The attack not only shattered assumptions about security but also deepened many Israelis’ connection to their spiritual heritage and the significance of the Temple Mount. Nearly half of those surveyed said their attachment to the site and the aspiration to rebuild the Temple has grown stronger since the tragedy.
The survey also revealed a major shift in how Israelis view the Temple Mount itself. More than half of respondents identified the Temple Mount as the location that best represents Jewish national, historical, and spiritual identity, surpassing the Western Wall by a wide margin. For decades, many Israelis accepted the status quo in which the Temple Mount remained under significant Islamic administrative control while Jewish worship centered on the Western Wall below. Today, that attitude appears to be changing. Growing numbers of Israelis are viewing the Temple Mount not merely as a historical site, but as a central component of Jewish sovereignty and national identity.
