Third Temple Talk Intensifies

Shmuel Eliyahu, a prominent Israeli rabbi and member of Israel’s Chief Rabbinate Council, is calling on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and government leaders to advance the establishment of a synagogue on the Temple Mount. Speaking during Jerusalem Day events while standing opposite the Temple Mount, Rabbi Eliyahu declared that the Islamic structures currently on the site are connected to Israel’s long exile and insisted that the First and Second Jewish Temples once stood there — and that a future Third Temple will one day stand there again. He argued that until such a Temple is rebuilt, a synagogue should be established on the mount itself.

Rabbi Eliyahu referenced previous rulings from his father, Mordechai Eliyahu, who held that certain areas of the Temple Mount could permit Jewish prayer according to Jewish law. The rabbi claimed that attitudes surrounding the site are changing and suggested that Israel’s leadership should actively strengthen Jewish presence there. His comments arrive amid increasing tensions surrounding Jerusalem, ongoing debates over sovereignty at the holy site, and growing calls among some religious groups for expanded Jewish access and worship rights on the mount.
