On March 20, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network released its annual World Happiness Report, once again naming Finland the world’s “happiest” country for the eighth year in a row. The report evaluates life satisfaction across more than 140 nations, using data from 2022 to 2024.
The Nordic countries continue to dominate the top rankings, with Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden holding second, third, and fourth place, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 are the Netherlands, Costa Rica, Norway, Israel, Luxembourg, and Mexico. Notably, Costa Rica and Mexico's presence in the top 10 marks a first for both Latin American nations.
The report bases its happiness rankings on six key criteria: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceived levels of corruption. These earthly measurements have kept Finland at the top—but they are rooted in temporary and external circumstances.
Interestingly, while some countries rise in the rankings, others are falling. The United States has dropped to 24th place, its lowest ranking ever. The report attributes this decline to increased feelings of loneliness and weakened social bonds, especially among those under 30. Young people today are reportedly feeling less supported by loved ones, less free to make decisions, and less hopeful about the future. The United Kingdom also dropped to its lowest rank ever—23rd—due to declining social trust and political division.
These trends should prompt us to reflect on what truly brings lasting joy and peace. While the world chases happiness through wealth, health, and freedom, the Bible teaches that real joy is found in a restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ. As Psalm 144:15 declares, “How blessed are the people whose God is the Lord!” No report can measure the eternal satisfaction that comes from walking with the Lord. READ MORE
