President Donald Trump is doubling down on his support for the rapid construction of artificial intelligence data centers across America, arguing that communities rejecting the massive facilities are making a serious economic mistake. In a recent interview, Trump said communities willing to welcome data centers are the “smart ones,” pointing to potential tax revenue and economic benefits as reasons local governments should embrace the projects. His comments come as resistance to data-center construction grows across political lines, with residents increasingly concerned about electricity demand, water consumption, pollution, noise, land use, and the enormous infrastructure required to keep AI systems running. The political backlash has become significant enough that Republican strategists are reportedly concerned opposition to data centers could become an issue in the November midterm elections.
The larger story, however, is the astonishing scale of the infrastructure being assembled behind the AI revolution. Modern AI systems require enormous quantities of computing power, and the facilities housing those machines can consume electricity on the scale of entire cities. Elon Musk's Colossus facility in Memphis, for example, could use roughly as much electricity as 200,000 American homes if operated at full strength for a year, while planned OpenAI facilities collectively could require more than 30 gigawatts of power. Data-center demand is becoming so enormous that companies are turning to natural-gas plants, extending the lives of existing power facilities, and even helping revive nuclear power projects. One estimate cited by The Atlantic suggests that by 2030, American data centers could consume more electricity than all U.S. heavy industries—including steel, cement, chemicals, and automobile manufacturing—combined. The AI revolution is no longer merely happening inside computer code; it is beginning to reshape America's electrical grid and physical landscape.
