The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to launch a new third-country deportation program that would send Iranian asylum-seekers and other migrants to the Central African Republic (CAR). According to reports, the first flight could depart within days carrying approximately 20 individuals from Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, and Turkey. The move follows a broader strategy by the administration to utilize agreements with third-party nations when migrants cannot be readily returned to their countries of origin.
Among those reportedly scheduled for deportation are two Iranian women who entered the United States in 2024 and were granted protection from removal by an immigration judge. One woman is said to be a Christian convert, while the other has been described as a democracy activist. Their attorney argues that both face significant risks if returned to Iran and has raised concerns about their transfer to a nation struggling with violence, weak governmental control, and ongoing security challenges. Human rights advocates have also voiced concerns that hundreds of migrants could eventually be sent to the Central African Republic under the newly negotiated agreement.
