Trump Fast-Tracks Quantum Computing w/ EO

Jun 24, 2026

The Trump administration has taken a major step toward accelerating America’s quantum future by signing two executive orders aimed at securing U.S. dominance in quantum computing. One directive calls for the development of a fault-tolerant quantum computer capable of scientific research by 2028, while a second order seeks to transition the federal government to post-quantum cryptography by 2031. The administration has placed quantum technology alongside artificial intelligence and nuclear energy as strategic priorities, signaling that Washington views the coming quantum revolution as both an economic opportunity and a national security imperative.

Federal agencies, including the Department of Energy, NASA, and the Commerce Department, have been tasked with developing quantum networks, sensors, and technical standards. The urgency behind these efforts stems from growing concerns that sufficiently advanced quantum computers may eventually break the encryption systems that currently protect financial transactions, government communications, military networks, and digital infrastructure. Researchers have warned that a future "Q-Day"—the moment quantum computers can defeat modern encryption—may arrive much sooner than expected. Technology companies, government agencies, and defense contractors are now racing to prepare for a world in which today's cybersecurity protections may become obsolete almost overnight.
