President Donald Trump sparked fresh debate over the future of the Middle East this week after suggesting that Syria, rather than Israel, should take the lead in confronting Hezbollah inside Lebanon. Speaking during a meeting with Qatar’s emir, Trump expressed frustration with the ongoing conflict, arguing that Israel's military operations have gone on too long and have resulted in excessive civilian casualties. He indicated that if Israel cannot effectively neutralize Hezbollah without broader destruction, Syria could potentially assume a greater role in addressing the threat in cooperation with the United States.
Trump's remarks were notable not only for their criticism of Israel's handling of the conflict, but also for his praise of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The U.S. president described Syria's leader as capable and effective, stating that he had successfully stabilized the country and fulfilled American expectations. Trump also revealed that he had previously encouraged Israel to allow Syria to deal with Hezbollah, suggesting that Damascus might be able to accomplish what years of conflict have failed to achieve. While affirming that he maintains a strong relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump emphasized that Israel must exercise greater restraint in Lebanon moving forward.
