Trump Suggests Gaza Freedom Zone

May 16, 2025

During a business roundtable in Qatar on May 15, President Donald Trump floated the idea of a U.S.-led redevelopment initiative in Gaza, suggesting the United States take control of the territory and transform it into a “freedom zone.” Trump proposed that the initiative would prioritize safety, modern infrastructure, and economic revitalization, stating that Hamas would need to be dealt with for such a plan to succeed. The proposal, originally outlined in a Time magazine article, envisions a demilitarized Gaza supported by a coalition including the U.S., Israel, and Arab nations, with Israel overseeing security and Gulf states like Saudi Arabia and the UAE contributing financial backing.

The plan, referred to as the Gaza Freedom Zone, aims to rebuild the region with schools, hospitals, and commercial centers, positioning Gaza as a model for post-conflict recovery. Trump’s team proposes attracting private investment through tax incentives and regulatory reforms, seeking to create jobs and reduce poverty. The initiative would also include humanitarian efforts to restore essential services and improve living conditions, with safeguards to prevent misuse of funds. By incorporating regional cooperation and leveraging the momentum of the Abraham Accords, the project aspires to provide Palestinians with stability and opportunity while addressing longstanding security concerns.
