President Donald Trump is expected to meet Gulf leaders in New York next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly for talks centered on the war with Iran and what comes afterward. According to a report cited by Israel National News, three sources familiar with the plans said the administration is developing a broader “day-after” strategy for the region. Leaders or foreign ministers from all six Gulf Cooperation Council countries—Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman—are expected to participate, while additional Arab and Muslim representatives could also be invited. The White House declined to comment on the reported meeting. Trump, meanwhile, has publicly said he believes Tehran wants an agreement with Washington and that he hopes the conflict is moving toward its conclusion.
The gathering would come after the Iran war dramatically altered the security calculations of the Gulf states. Countries hosting American military installations have faced Iranian attacks during the conflict, while disruptions to oil and natural-gas exports have inflicted economic damage across the region. That makes the proposed meeting about far more than ending the shooting. Washington and its Arab partners would have to consider Iran’s postwar military capabilities, regional security, energy flows, proxy forces, and the future balance of power throughout the Middle East. Israel will inevitably loom over those calculations as well. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly wants to meet Trump while both leaders are in New York, although no meeting had been scheduled at the time of the report. What emerges from these discussions could reshape alliances that only a few years ago would have seemed almost unimaginable.
