TX Candidate Targets "Zionists"

May 20, 2026

A Texas congressional candidate is facing mounting backlash after making inflammatory remarks targeting “American Zionists” in a social media post that critics across the political spectrum condemned as openly antisemitic. Maureen Galindo, a Democratic candidate in Texas’s 35th Congressional District runoff, stated that she would convert the Karnes ICE Detention Center into a prison for “American Zionists and former ICE officers,” while also making disturbing comments linking Zionists to criminal behavior. The remarks immediately ignited outrage online and prompted sharp rebukes from both Republicans and fellow Democrats, including Congressman Jared Moskowitz, who warned that such rhetoric resembled calls for “concentration camps for American Jews.”

The controversy comes amid rising antisemitic incidents across the United States and around the world. Galindo, who has denied being antisemitic while continuing to criticize “Zionist Jews,” has also accused political opponents and wealthy Zionists of controlling trafficking networks in South Texas. Her comments arrive during a period where Jewish communities are increasingly voicing concerns over escalating hostility, threats, and violence. Critics argue that rhetoric once confined to fringe corners of the internet is now openly surfacing in mainstream political campaigns, further intensifying fears surrounding antisemitism’s normalization in Western society.
