The United Arab Emirates has issued a sharp warning in response to Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s call to impose full sovereignty over Judea and Samaria, calling the move a “red line” that could jeopardize the Abraham Accords. Senior UAE Foreign Ministry official Lana Nusseibeh told Reuters that such a step would represent a “strategic loss” for the region. While she stressed that normalization with Israel remains a central strategic choice for the Emirates, she made clear that actions contradicting the spirit of the peace agreements would not be tolerated.

Smotrich, leader of the far-right Religious Zionism party, declared earlier that “the time has come to apply full sovereignty in Judea and Samaria,” a statement that immediately drew regional backlash. The UAE’s response underscores the fragility of the 2020 Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations including the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco. With tensions already high in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the ultimatum raises fears that any unilateral sovereignty push could unravel recent diplomatic progress and trigger wider instability in the Middle East.
