The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is facing accusations from the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) of promoting antisemitic tropes after displaying a banner reading “Stop Killing Children – Stop Killing Civilians” before the UEFA Super Cup final in Udine, Italy. The match featured Paris Saint-Germain against London’s Tottenham Hotspur, a club with a large Jewish fanbase. The banner, held by nine refugee children from various conflict zones including Gaza, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, “Palestine,” and Ukraine, was part of an opening ceremony organized by UEFA’s Foundation for Children. UEFA also invited two refugee children from Gaza to participate in the medal ceremony.

The CAA denounced UEFA’s decision, arguing it displayed “selective outrage” by highlighting Palestinian suffering while ignoring the plight of Israeli civilians and Jewish hostages held for nearly two years by Hamas. They noted the banner’s unveiling at a Spurs match carried a troubling historical undertone, evoking centuries-old blood libel accusations against Jews. CAA criticized UEFA for failing to acknowledge Jewish children killed or traumatized in the ongoing conflict, suggesting the action reflects persistent double standards in European discourse regarding Israel and the Jewish people.
