UK Gov Site Posted Sharia Law Job Opening

Aug 1, 2025

A recent controversy has erupted in the UK after a government-run job board posted an advertisement for a £23,500-a-year “Sharia Law Administrator” position based at a mosque in South Manchester. The listing, submitted by the Manchester Islamic Centre, called for applicants with a degree in Sharia law and experience in Sharia courts in Muslim countries. Outraged MPs quickly responded, demanding its removal and warning that the government should not be seen as promoting or legitimizing a parallel justice system rooted in Islamic jurisprudence. Despite the backlash, mosque leaders defended the posting, saying their Sharia services merely function as religious arbitration panels, not legal courts.

The issue has reignited concerns about the growing presence of Sharia councils in Britain—up to 85 by some counts—operating outside the formal legal system to handle matters like marriage and divorce within Muslim communities. Critics argue these bodies undermine British law and risk fostering a dual legal structure within the nation. Independent MP Rupert Lowe described the job post as “alarming” and accused the Department for Work and Pensions of enabling the establishment of an incompatible legal framework in the UK. While arbitration services are legally permitted, many see this development as part of a broader trend that challenges national sovereignty and the uniform application of civil law.
