UK Imam Defends Antisemitic Hadith Quote

Jul 11, 2025

A recent controversy in the UK has sparked outrage after Muslim preacher Harun Abdur Rashid Holmes defended quoting a hadith that speaks of a future war in which Muslims kill Jews. Delivered shortly after the October 7 Hamas attacks, the sermon referenced Sahih Muslim 2922, a hadith often cited by extremists to justify antisemitic violence. The UK’s Charity Commission condemned the remarks as inflammatory and divisive, noting that they lacked proper context. Holmes, however, insists he did nothing wrong, claiming he was merely quoting Islamic prophecy about the end times—not inciting violence in the present.

Holmes further accused critics of taking his sermon out of context and being motivated by Islamophobia. Despite the sermon’s disturbing content, Nottinghamshire Police reportedly investigated the matter in 2023 and took no further action. The situation highlights the difficult legal and moral balancing act facing UK authorities: how to protect free religious expression while also confronting incitement that fuels division and hatred in an increasingly tense cultural climate.
