UK Sanctions Israeli Settlers, Halts Trade

May 21, 2025

The British government announced new sanctions on Tuesday targeting prominent figures and organizations involved in Israeli settlement activity in Judea and Samaria. This move follows a joint condemnation issued by the UK, France, and Canada, criticizing Israel's policies and its recent military campaign, Operation Gideon's Chariots, in Gaza. Among those sanctioned are activist Daniela Weiss, the Nachala Movement, and construction firms including Libi Construction and Infrastructure LTD and its administrator, Libi Harel. Also named was Zohar Sabah, a farm operator previously accused of violence against Palestinians. These individuals and entities had already been sanctioned by both the Biden administration and the European Union.

Alongside the sanctions, the UK government announced a suspension of free-trade negotiations with Israel and summoned Israeli Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely to formally voice its disapproval. Addressing Parliament, Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the recent escalation, emphasizing the need for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian relief. “We are horrified by the escalation from Israel,” he said, adding that the conflict must end to ensure the release of hostages and to prevent further suffering in Gaza.
