UK Synagogue Attacker of Syrian Origin

Oct 3, 2025

Police in the UK say a deadly attack outside a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur was carried out by a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian origin, identified as Jihad Al-Shamie. The assailant drove a car into worshippers before stabbing several people, killing two and leaving four others seriously injured. Armed officers shot and killed him at the scene, though authorities initially delayed confirmation due to a vest that appeared to contain explosives. It was later determined he did not have a bomb. The Metropolitan Police have declared the incident a terrorist attack.

In addition to the attacker, police arrested three other suspects on terrorism charges—two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s—on suspicion of commission, preparation, and instigation of terrorist acts. The assault, carried out on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, has shaken the local community and sparked fresh concerns over the growing wave of antisemitic violence in the UK. Authorities continue to investigate possible connections between Al-Shamie and wider extremist networks.
