UK Ties Palestinian Statehood to Ceasefire

Jul 29, 2025

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly preparing to announce a conditional framework for recognizing a Palestinian state, according to The Telegraph. The plan, expected later this week, would tie recognition to key developments such as a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. This move comes amid mounting pressure from Labour MPs and cabinet ministers, many of whom are demanding immediate recognition. However, Downing Street has emphasized that any formal recognition will be aligned with broader diplomatic efforts and will depend on facts on the ground, not just political momentum.

Starmer has thus far resisted calls for immediate recognition, stating that any such step must be part of a larger strategy that guarantees long-term security for both Israelis and Palestinians. His comments came shortly after French President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s intention to formally recognize Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly. The UK’s approach appears more cautious and conditional, especially as the United States expressed skepticism toward recent international efforts, with the U.S. State Department calling a related recognition conference “unproductive and ill-timed.” Starmer is also expected to reconvene his cabinet next week to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
