Ukraine launched a major overnight drone assault deep inside Russian territory, striking targets in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city and the hometown of President Vladimir Putin. According to reports, the attack targeted an oil export terminal and a nearby military installation, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and causing explosions across multiple districts. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed responsibility for the operation, which occurred only hours before the opening of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum—an event often used by the Kremlin to project economic stability and global influence.
Russian officials claimed that air defense systems intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones across the country, including dozens near St. Petersburg. Nevertheless, the strikes disrupted airport operations, damaged infrastructure, and highlighted Ukraine’s growing ability to project force far beyond the front lines. The attack reflects a significant shift in the conflict as Ukraine increasingly targets critical logistical and economic assets deep inside Russia. Reports indicate that fuel shortages, transportation disruptions, and mounting military pressures are beginning to strain Russia’s ability to sustain its prolonged war effort.
