A new report from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is drawing sharp criticism for proposing that the best way to address declining global fertility rates is not through encouraging childbirth or strengthening the traditional family, but rather through expanded access to abortion, LGBTQ-inclusive family structures, and government welfare. The 156-page report, The Real Fertility Crisis, claims that declining birthrates are not the true issue—what really matters, it argues, is increasing "reproductive autonomy" through sweeping changes that include eliminating pro-life laws, normalizing artificial fertility for LGBTQ individuals, and undermining social and religious norms about motherhood and family roles. The UNFPA further advocates for increased immigration as a way to offset low birthrates, even if such policies are unpopular with citizens.
Pro-family experts have responded forcefully, accusing the agency of global "gaslighting" and pushing an ideological agenda under the guise of public health. Critics argue that the UNFPA is repackaging decades-old population control strategies, ignoring the value of natural family growth while promoting policies that historically reduce fertility. The report also calls for combatting "misinformation" about abortion and sexual health, labeling pro-life protections as a form of "violence" akin to forced sterilization. By framing traditional family values and parental influence as coercive, the UNFPA reveals its deeper ambition—not just to manage demographics, but to reshape societies. As many see it, the organization is weaponizing a fertility crisis to push abortion, redefine the family, and sideline faith-based values. With President Trump having previously defunded the UNFPA for its connections to coercive practices like China’s One Child policy, this latest report may only reinforce the wisdom of that decision.
