Two Christian student organizations are suing Virginia State University after alleging that the public university stripped them of official recognition and attempted to place their ministries under the authority of a university-appointed campus minister. Alliance Defending Freedom filed the federal lawsuit on behalf of the campus chapters of Women of Victory and Bethel Campus Fellowship, challenging VSU’s revised Campus Ministries Policy. According to the complaint, Christian ministries must operate under the “governance and influence” of the university’s campus minister, Thomas Wynn, and an advisory board composed of university personnel. The policy also prevents covered Christian ministries from maintaining affiliations with outside parent ministries—an especially consequential restriction for student groups whose doctrine, leadership, training, and accountability are connected to national Christian organizations.
The lawsuit argues that the policy crosses a constitutional line because VSU is not merely regulating when or where student organizations meet, but allegedly inserting university officials into the governance of Christian ministries themselves. ADF further contends that the restrictions are applied unequally, pointing to exemptions available to some non-Christian religious organizations. Attorney Travis Barham told Fox News Digital that a public university cannot constitutionally treat secular organizations more favorably than religious organizations or discriminate among religious groups. VSU will have an opportunity to defend its policy in court, and the lawsuit's allegations are not themselves a final determination that the university violated the First Amendment. But the dispute raises a significant religious-liberty question: Can a government university require Christian students to surrender control over the leadership and affiliations of their own ministries as the price of official campus recognition?
