US Draft Registration Goes Automatic

Apr 9, 2026

The U.S. federal government is moving toward automatic registration for the military draft, with implementation expected by December 2026. The change comes after Congress approved the measure as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, shifting responsibility away from individuals and placing it directly on the Selective Service System. Under the new system, eligible young men will be automatically enrolled using existing federal data sources, streamlining what has traditionally been a manual process.

Currently, U.S. law requires most males between the ages of 18 and 25 to register for potential conscription in the event of a national emergency. The new rule does not expand eligibility but ensures compliance by removing the need for individuals to take action themselves. Officials state that the change will improve efficiency and accuracy, while also reducing administrative burdens associated with tracking registration.
