The latest round of indirect talks between the United States and Iran in Doha ended without a final agreement, yet officials from both sides described the meetings as productive enough to continue negotiations after the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, the discussions reportedly focused on maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and the preservation of a fragile ceasefire that has repeatedly been tested by military confrontations in recent weeks. While President Trump stated that relations with Iran are improving, the underlying disputes that brought the two nations to the brink of war remain largely unresolved.
The Strait of Hormuz continues to sit at the center of the crisis. Iran maintains that it possesses authority over shipping traffic through the strategic waterway and has proposed transit fees and new maritime arrangements that have been rejected by the United States and its allies. Recent attacks on commercial vessels, American strikes on Iranian military targets, and competing claims over control of the strait demonstrate how quickly the region could return to open conflict. Although oil markets responded positively to the Doha talks, negotiators left Qatar without a permanent agreement, choosing instead to regroup after Khamenei’s funeral and resume discussions at a later date.
