The month-long lull between the United States and Iran came to an abrupt end Sunday when U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. According to U.S. Central Command, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the waterway, threatening commercial shipping just days after American forces completed efforts to clear mines from international shipping routes. Washington described the operation as a limited and precise strike against an imminent threat, while Iran said the attack killed and wounded military personnel and civilians. The strike marked the first publicly confirmed U.S. military attack inside Iran since late July and immediately shattered hopes that the conflict might be settling into a prolonged ceasefire or diplomatic stalemate.
Iran responded within hours, launching ballistic missiles toward U.S. military positions in Jordan and claiming additional attacks against American assets in the United Arab Emirates. Jordan's military reported intercepting eight missiles that entered its airspace, while U.S. officials said there were no reported casualties or significant damage to American bases. The renewed fighting places the Strait of Hormuz back at the center of the confrontation. Before the current war, roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply moved through the narrow waterway, but maritime traffic has fallen dramatically amid mines, attacks on vessels, and the continuing U.S.-Iranian confrontation. Tehran has repeatedly demonstrated that even when its conventional military capabilities are under pressure, its geographic position gives it enormous leverage over one of the world's most important energy corridors. One missile, mine, or miscalculation in Hormuz can now send consequences far beyond the Middle East.
