Tensions escalated in the Arabian Sea on April 19 as U.S. Central Command confirmed a direct military engagement with an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel that allegedly violated an active maritime blockade. According to CENTCOM, the U.S. Navy issued repeated warnings to the vessel, identified as the M/V Touska, as it moved at speed toward Bandar Abbas, Iran. The situation unfolded over a tense six-hour standoff, with American forces attempting to compel compliance through communication before taking further action.
When the vessel failed to respond to multiple warnings, the guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance (DDG-111) escalated the encounter. U.S. forces directed the crew to evacuate the engine room before firing several rounds from the ship’s MK 45 5-inch gun, effectively disabling the vessel’s propulsion. Following the strike, Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit boarded the ship, which is now in U.S. custody. CENTCOM emphasized that the response was measured, deliberate, and consistent with enforcement protocols, noting that 25 vessels have been turned away since the blockade began.
