The United States Department of Transportation has officially launched a new biometric registration system for truck drivers and commercial transport carriers, marking another major expansion of digital identity verification in America. The new system, called Motus, replaces older registration platforms and now requires commercial drivers to verify their identity using government-issued IDs, facial biometric scans, and advanced fraud detection systems. Officials say the new registry is designed to crack down on fraud and prevent unsafe drivers or bad actors from creating new identities to bypass regulations within the trucking industry.
The system relies on technology from Idemia for facial biometric verification and Clear for data analytics and business validation. The Department of Transportation says the previous process allowed drivers to register using only basic information such as names and email addresses, creating loopholes for fraud and abuse. Now, identity verification data will also connect with the federal Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse database to flag drivers banned due to intoxicated driving violations. Within days of launch, reports indicate that roughly 50,000 carriers had already registered through the new platform.
