The United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on Thursday that called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, arguing the measure failed to condemn Hamas or affirm Israel’s right to defend itself. While all 14 other council members supported the resolution, the U.S. described it as “unacceptable” for legitimizing false narratives that benefit Hamas. Senior policy adviser Morgan Ortagus criticized the resolution for ignoring U.S. warnings and accused other members of staging “performative action designed to draw a veto.” The text, drafted by the council’s 10 elected members, went further than previous drafts in emphasizing the “deepening of suffering” in Gaza and demanding Israel lift restrictions on humanitarian aid to the territory’s 2.1 million residents.
The vote underscored America’s growing isolation alongside Israel on the global stage as the Gaza war nears two years. The timing was especially significant, falling just days before the UN General Assembly, where Gaza is expected to dominate discussion and U.S. allies like the UK and France prepare to back recognition of a Palestinian state—an effort staunchly opposed by both Washington and Jerusalem. Palestinian ambassador Riyad Mansour expressed the frustration of his people, saying many watched the proceedings hoping for relief, only to see another opportunity for resolution slip away.
