Vatican Declines Trump's Peace Board

Feb 19, 2026

The Vatican has announced it will not participate in President Donald Trump’s newly formed “Board of Peace,” an international body initially designed to oversee the Gaza truce and reconstruction efforts following the war between Hamas and Israel. The initiative, which has since expanded its mandate to address broader global conflicts, has drawn international attention—and concern. Nineteen nations have reportedly signed its founding charter, with permanent membership requiring a $1 billion contribution. The board’s first meeting is set to take place this week.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, made clear that the Holy See believes global crises should remain under the authority of the United Nations. He emphasized that the UN is the proper framework for resolving international disputes and managing conflict situations. The Vatican’s decision signals hesitation toward what some perceive as a parallel diplomatic structure—one that could rival existing global institutions and potentially reshape the balance of international governance.
