Vatican Jubilee Features LGBTQ Pilgrimage

Sep 2, 2025

The Vatican is preparing to host a series of LGBTQ-focused events during the Jubilee, including a Mass, prayer vigils, and a pilgrimage to St. Peter’s Basilica. On September 5, the gathering “Listening to the Experiences of LGBTQ Catholics” will be held within the Vatican, organized by the U.S.-based group Outreach, founded by Jesuit Father James Martin. That evening, a prayer vigil will take place at the Church of the Gesù, where participants will present a rainbow crucifix brought by LGBTQ pilgrims and their parents. Many have raised concerns that blending the cross of Christ with the rainbow, a symbol used to affirm lifestyles Scripture defines as sinful (Lev. 18:22; Rom. 1:26–27), distorts the true meaning of the gospel.

The following day, Bishop Francesco Savino will preside over a Mass and lead a Jubilee pilgrimage to the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica, with over 1,000 participants expected, before joining Pope Francis for the Angelus. While the Pope has expressed openness to LGBTQ individuals, insisting the Church should not close its doors to anyone, critics argue that these events move beyond compassion and toward affirmation of unrepentant sin. They warn that what is unfolding in Rome reflects not an invitation to repentance, as Jesus called for when He said, “Go and sin no more” (John 8:11), but rather a public display of compromise that risks leading the Church into apostasy.
