The death toll from Venezuela’s devastating twin earthquakes continues to climb as rescue crews race against time to locate survivors beneath collapsed buildings and mountains of debris. As of June 29, authorities report that at least 1,450 people have died and more than 3,150 have been injured after the powerful 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck the country on June 24. The coastal state of La Guaira remains the hardest-hit region, where entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble and thousands have been displaced from their homes. While rescue teams from more than two dozen nations continue searching through the wreckage, officials say that between 50,000 and nearly 69,000 people remain missing or unaccounted for, making the disaster one of the deadliest and most devastating natural catastrophes in modern Venezuelan history. Despite several miraculous rescues in recent days, hopes of finding additional survivors are fading as the critical rescue window closes and humanitarian needs continue to grow across the affected regions.
