Venezuela Turns Back Toward Israel

Aug 12, 2026

Israel and Venezuela have agreed to renew consular relations for the first time since 2009, marking a dramatic reversal after 17 years without diplomatic ties. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Félix Plasencia reached the agreement following weeks of negotiations, establishing a formal coordination mechanism that will allow both governments to provide consular services to their citizens. Venezuela severed relations with Israel under Hugo Chávez during the 2008–2009 Gaza war and subsequently became one of Latin America's most outspoken critics of the Jewish state. Now, an official channel between Jerusalem and Caracas is reopening, potentially laying the groundwork for a broader restoration of relations.

The significance becomes even greater when Venezuela's longtime alliances are considered. Under Chávez and Nicolás Maduro, Caracas cultivated close relations with Iran while repeatedly positioning itself against Israel. But Venezuela's foreign policy has undergone a remarkable transformation in 2026 following Maduro's removal from power and the rise of acting President Delcy Rodríguez. Israel had already expressed hope that the new government would pursue better relations, and Israeli humanitarian assistance following Venezuela's devastating earthquakes helped accelerate the thaw. Venezuela's Jewish community has also pushed for renewed relations, arguing that direct consular services are needed to meet the needs of thousands of Jews still living in the country. What was once one of Iran's closest partners in the Western Hemisphere is now reopening a diplomatic door to the nation Tehran has repeatedly threatened to destroy.
