Violence Erupts Against Syrian Christians

Mar 30, 2026

Syria’s Christian community has been shaken by a violent, large-scale attack on the town of Suqaylabiyah just days before Palm Sunday, leaving homes, shops, and property destroyed. What reportedly began as a localized dispute quickly escalated into a coordinated assault, as armed men from a neighboring town stormed the Christian community—shooting, burning, and terrorizing residents. Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of fear and chaos, with families forced to defend their homes as mobs rampaged through the streets.

This attack is part of a growing pattern of sectarian violence across Syria, where minorities—including Christians, Druze, and others—have increasingly come under threat. Despite claims of stability following the end of the civil war, reports suggest that elements within the new regime may be complicit or ineffective in preventing such violence. The dramatic decline of Syria’s Christian population—from around two million to just a fraction of that—underscores the ongoing vulnerability of believers in the region. What once was a stronghold of early Christianity is now a landscape marked by fear, displacement, and persecution.
